Free Tomorrow????

Free Tomorrow? Come and join us at The Mill Edinburgh (Cabaret Voltaire, 19.30) with The Law and The Valkarys.

Hailing from Dundee, The Law formed initially to write and play songs as a means of venting their frustrations at girlfriends and bosses. The results? Instantly memorable and bittersweet stomping songs that were well worth the agony.Surprisingly upbeat band members include Stuart Purvey (vocals), Stevie Anderson (guitar), brothers Martin Donald (drums), and Simon Donald (bass). They spent the majority of 2008 writing, recording, and mastering songs for their debut album with sessions recorded at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall (the birthplace of Oasis’ Definitely Maybe) with producer Stan Kybert (Paul Weller, Massive Attack). This resulted in receiving a prestigious Tartan Clef Music Award in 2008 as XFM’s Best Breakthrough Act.

Many say The Valkarys are Edinburgh’s best kept secret. Taking there influences from the best of the sixtie’s and adding a psychedelic modern twist, they are attracting more and more fans to every gig. What’s more, they’ve just recorded their new E.P, which will be released later this year to coincide with a national tour.

An evening in honour of Billy Kelly - TONIGHT

Billy Kelly, the visionary behind Glasgow's Mayfest (a precursor to Celtic Connections) is being honoured by Scotland's new Song Writing Awards as they pay tribute to his contribution to the Scottish Music industry.

Date: Thurs 15th October
Venue: The Venue, Oran Mor, Glasgow
Time: 8pm
Guest List: 0845 838 0268 - chris@genuinepr.com or fiona@genuinepr.comBilly

Kelly, the visionary behind Glasgow's Mayfest (a precursor to Celtic Connections) is being honoured by a new Song Writing Award in his honour as former colleagues pay tribute to his contribution to the Scottish Music industry.

The Awards are the brainchild of Oran Mor owner Colin Beattie, who was a great friend and business associate of Kelly's. Beattie worked with Kelly for many years on Mayfest and then more recently on Kelly’s Big Big World Programme. In December 2008, following multiple heats, quarter and semi finals, a top panel (Peter McDougall, Frankie Miller, Ken McCluskey, Donald Shaw, Bobby Bluebell and John McLaughlin) convened to judge the finalists at a live gig with contenders including Tommy Reilly winner of Orange Unsigned, Martin Jones, Joe Gallagher, and The Tracks. Robin Adams emerged ahead of the talented entrants.

Colin Beattie commented, “The Mantra for the Billy Kelly Award is simple: it’s not a competition it’s an Award. "All of the finalist’s are winners in their own right, however the Award was given to the Songwriter who the Judges thought had the strongest selection of songs based on their performance on the night."

Adams received the first prize, which included £5000 worth of support, promotion, production and recording time including studio time with Glasvegas producer John McLaughlin to create his debut solo album "Down to Reverie". He will be performing live tracks from the album at the gig to coincide with the albums official released on Monday (19th October) on Eye Dog Eye Records.

Hope to see you there.

All the best,
The G Team

The Mill Glasgow - United Fruit & Orko

This week at The Mill Glasgow (Oran Mor, Thurs 4th June) we have United Fruit & Orko performing.

United Fruit
Buried deep in the heart of Glasgow, United Fruit are a new exciting quartet bringing their unique thunderous brand of catchy, chaotic alt rock to a thriving scene of noisy bands. They have been compared to bands such as At The Drive-In, Sonic Youth, Fugazi And Mclusky. Spending their first year in the underground circuit supporting bands such as Monotonix, Desalvo and Maps & Atlases, to featuring at bills across Scotland including Go North festival in Inverness and 2 Days in Stereo in Glasgow, they are gathering their own little army. Their first EP ‘Mistress, Reptile Mistress!’ came out at the end of May on Glasgow indie label She Said Records to glowing reviews. They are due to release their anticipated first album in early 2010.

Orko
Orko are a 4 piece rock band from Glasgow who have been slowly building a name for themselves with their powerful performances and clever songwriting. They have been compared to American Indie Heroes, Hey Mercedes and Far as well as Scottish bands such as Stapleton and Idlewild although few of these comparisons really ring completely true. Having played and toured with bands such as Hundred Reasons, Hell Is For Heroes, Biffy Clyro, Oceansize, Fightstar, Twin Atlantic, Sucioperro, Brigade, Kids in Glass Houses and The Kooks to name but a few, they have grown to be one of the best live bands on the Scottish circuit. Their debut album ‘Creating Short Fiction’ was released on Gravity DIP Records to widespread acclaim.

The Mill is a the creative brandchild of Miller Genuine Draft providing emerging bands the tools to further their music career.

Rock on A year of The Mill Glasgow with Thursday (27th Aug) with Broken Records and We Were Promised Jetpacks.

A year of The Mill Glasgow

It's been a whole year since The Mill, created by Miller Genuine Draft, first opened its doors. To celebrate we are welcoming back two crowd favourites from the last year - We Were Promised Jetpacks and Broken Records to the stage in Glasgow this Thursday, 27th Aug with a DJ set from new music hero Jim Gellatly will end each evening!

In keeping with the ethos of The Mill, which is quickly becoming known as one of the best platforms for up and coming musical talent, each act has handpicked a hotly tipped emerging band who they’d like to see receive the support offered by an appearance on-stage at The Mill.

Broken Records are championing Sparrow & the Workshop, We Were Promised Jetpacks introduce Some Young Pedro.

In a final exciting addition, during Jim Gellatly’s DJ set Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, The Delgados) will produce a limited edition CD of live recordings from the gig as an exclusive giveaway to all ticket holders on the night. This CD is set to be a true collector’s item.

As usual, The Mill Manager Keren McKean will be working with the renowned Tony Doogan to produce recordings and videos. The artists retain rights for them, giving every performer a host of genuinely different assets to help them develop on their way.

Don't miss Big Ned and Ming Ming & The Ching Chings!

Ming Ming & The Ching Chings and Big Ned are playing The Mill Glasgow tomorrow night (Thursday 30th July at Oran Mor, Doors 8pm).

Big Ned really are one of those bands that are the best kept secret. You’ll need to hunt them out but when you find them, you’ll love it. We did the searching for you and are bringing them to The Mill to introduce you to their own blend of doom ‘n’ roll as they describe it. Optimo Music found them first and are releasing both their single "Bad Angel" and their eponymous album. To give you a bit of an idea, they like slow bluesy rock, but they also like Country and Western. David Lynch movies and dark Americana also have a place in their hearts and they love trance. To top it all off they think 3 chords are too much. Best way to understand Big Ned is to see them live so here is your chance.www.myspace.com/bignedwantsyou

Ming Ming and The Ching Chings are a lo-fi rockabilly disco punk rock band from Glasgow. They formed in the late summer of 2007 and have been described by one fan as ‘like a rave in a monkeyhouse!’ Influenced by the likes of The Cramps, The Fall, Monks, Fire Engines to LCD Soundsystem, ESG and Elvis, they have been gigging just over a year, supporting the likes of 1990s, wearethephysics, Murder by Death, and The Duke Spirit. Last year’s highlights for the band include a video and live performance collaboration with Japanese artist Tomoko Takahshi as part of the Glasgow International Art Fair, a manically busy gig as guests of Optimo and a track featured on the Art/Goes/Pop complilation. They also headlined an Art Collective gig at The Royal Academy of Arts, Piccadilly London in December followed by ‘Pin-Up Nights’ Hogmanay Ball at The Flying Duck and the band their own “Bells’ gig at The Brunswick Hotel, which highlighted a very productive and successful first year for the band.www.myspace.com/mingmingthechingchings

Last night at the Mill . . .

Glasgow band Bronto Skylift took to the stage at Oran Mor last night. The series of gigs this band are playing are obviously not tiring them out too much, as they played another outstanding set. Followed up by Gap Year Riot! playing in their energetic style that is fast becoming their trademark. The crowd weren't afraid to dance along to Gap Year Riot!'s upbeat tunes which contributed to the great atmosphere. All in all another memorable night.

Now we've calmed down from that one, but we're not getting too sad. There's The Mill Edinburgh next week to look forward to - featuring Lions.Chase.Tigers and Paper Beats Rock. To get your nands on FREE tickets log onto http://www.themill-live.com/
